NEW DELHI - India announced plans Dec. 24 to shift control of a major shipyard to the military to boost naval warship production amid complaints of delays in existing projects.

The announcement came two days after the military expressed concern about India's depleted underwater combat capabilities due to delays in constructing tactical submarines for the 134-ship navy.

Information Minister Ambika Soni said the cabinet would transfer control of the country's second largest shipyard, Hindustan Shipbuilding Yard, to the military from the shipping industry.

"It is going to be transferred to the Ministry of Defence for meeting national security requirements of building strategic vessels for the Indian navy," Soni told a news conference after a cabinet meeting.

On Dec. 22, a top government security panel said it was worried about delays in a $6.6 billion (30 billion-rupee) project codenamed P75-India to build six submarines by 2015.

"Concern over the delays had been expressed by the navy and the defence ministry," a senior government official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The navy, which launched its first nuclear-powered submarine in July, praised Soni's announcement.

"It is a forward step and will go a long way to assist in the nation's indigenous warship-building activity," Navy spokesman commander K.V. Satish said.

Satish said the Navy had regarded the "current rate of warship building as inadequate."

He also said a $3 billion (2.4 billion euro) project to locally build six Franco-Spanish Scorpene submarines had also been delayed because of capacity restraints.

The Chinese have 62 submarines which is nearly half of our fleet, and they have only one focus of Indian shores. Whereas Indian Navy has to keep vigil on two fronts. But as usual Congress is busy minting money and revealing scams of multi crore with defense personnel as active participant. What will happen if China attacks soon after Mr wen leaves India and repeats a 1962 situation?

1962 Situation was the output of Indira Gandhi's foolishness.
later Sam Manekshaw quoted that...

this even i have read at bharat-rakshak.com but still the government is doing the same foolish activities, we have border dispute with china coming up soon after Mr. Wen left. 1600km of odd border is not being quoted in chinese documents, chinese map show sikkim and arunachal as parts of china. India can achieve deterrence easily by giving the scientists a go ahead.

sorry to say friend but please update your facts because what u are quoting is the incidence of 1971 war, 1962 war was a blunder of Nehru (bastard). He never used air force which was more advanced than china. we had bombers with 600 kg bombs capacity and endurence to deliver them deep in china in those times. Air force could have been used to cut off their supply route but congress genius ordered no use of it. In 1971 Indira Gandhi did the same , when good leadership skill and strategic planning of Field Marshal S.H.F.J. Manekshaw saved India on two front war.

Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister in 1966 .
In 1962 Nehru was PM .
His biggest mistake - India didn't use Indian Airforce in India- China war .

Crying or Very sad
